Sports betting is legal in the state of New Jersey. Not only was The Garden State an early adopter of legalizing both retail and online sports betting, but New Jersey was also the driving force behind the overturning of PASPA (the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) back in 2018.
By suing the NCAA in a case that ended with PASPA being deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, New Jersey ushered in a new era of gambling.
The New Jersey Legislature legalized sports betting, at both casinos and racetracks, on June 11, 2018. This also allowed casinos to gain approval for online and mobile sports betting, with the first online sports bet taken in August 2018.
