FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sports betting is legal at both land-based and online casinos in the state of Iowa. Iowa was one of the first Midwestern states to legalize both in 2019.
Iowa was early in making moves to legalize sports betting across the state, compared to other Midwestern states. Soon after PASPA was overturned by the Supreme Court in May 2018, Iowa jumped at the opportunity and had legalized retail and online sports betting by August 2019.
Jump forward to January 4, 2021, and BetMGM entered the Iowa sports betting market and launched the BetMGM online sports betting app, bringing the best sports betting experience to Iowans across the state.
Yes, Iowans are able to register at online sportsbooks, fund their accounts, and place bets online from anywhere in the state. This wasn’t always the case though, as, before January 2021, bettors were required to register their online accounts in-person at brick-and-mortar casinos before they could place bets online.
Betting on College Sports is permitted but with some restrictions. Iowa does not permit player proposition wagers on the performance or nonperformance of any individual athlete participating in a single game or match of a collegiate sporting event in which a collegiate team from the State of Iowa is a participant, but otherwise, the college sports betting market is open for Iowans to bet on and enjoy.
In Iowa, you get the best of both worlds – Iowa has long allowed in-person gambling at casinos, with many existing casinos now offering classic Vegas-style sportsbooks and betting options.
BetMGM launched a retail sportsbook in conjunction with Diamond Jo Casino, but we believe online sports betting is going to take over the market entirely, as a result of the in-person registration requirement being withdrawn, allowing Iowans to register and bet at online sportsbooks from anywhere in the state.
In order to participate in retail or online sports betting in Iowa, bettors must be at least 21 years or older.
